ROMSOC ETC-1 Course: PDAE Modelling and Numerical Simulation

About this course

Coupled problems often comprise lumped elements, which are described by pure topological quantities, and distributed elements with space dimension of one to three. Modelling these systems yields partial differential-algebraic systems, for short PDAEs, which link differential-algebraic (DAE) models for lumped elements with PDE models for distributed ones. DAE and PDE models are linked by source terms and boundary conditions . The block course will analyse PDAE models from a modelling perspective based on applications from different fields, an analytic perspective (well-posedness, sensitivity and property preservation), as well as a numerical perspective (co-simulation and dynamic iteration, multirate and MOR schemes). The course will combine theoretical lectures with hands-on experiences gained by lab exercises.

This course is jointly organised by ROMSOC, the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and the Stichting SCEE.

February 11-15, 2019

The course will conclude with oral exams or written test depending on the number of participants.

Course structure

  • Module 1: Network modelling by differential-algebraic equations
  • Module 2: PDAE-models: modelling approach and analysis (well-posedness and index concepts)
  • Module 3: Applications in computational engineering
  • Module 4: Dynamic iteration, model order reduction and multirate schemes
  • Module 5: Wrap up

Each day will consist of four hours lecture in the morning and two hours (lab) exercise in the afternoon.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Günther

The course will consist of 20 lectures (each 45 minutes) plus 8 exercise sessions (each 45-60 min) using Matlab and/or Python. Groups of up to three students are invited to perform the exercises together.

We propose to stay in the IBIS hotel Wuppertal City, which is nicely located: just a few meters to the city center of Elberfeld and a five minutes walk to the Wicküler City premises of the university.

The fee is 400 €. It can be paid by bank transfer to Stichting SCEE, ING Bank, IBAN NL51INGB0009033391, BIC INGBNL2A until February, 4. Later it can be paid in cash on arrival. The fee may be waived for students of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal upon application.
